  15. <JOHN.MAIHOS> This is the third in a series of resume workshops..
  16. <JOHN.MAIHOS> we have run here in WORKPLACE.
  17. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I'm am the personnel Director of a group of daily newspapers in
  18. Massachusetts.
  19. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I've been in personnel for almost 10 years and in management for
  20. 8 years before that.
  21. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Mike will tell you about himself.
  22. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> I am a principle in  a company that specializes in the
  23. personnel systems area....
  24. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> we have been in business for 7 years in the midwest....
  25. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> and  when I had a real job... !5 years of first line, mid
  26. and upper management.
  27. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Listen to him.. a "real" job!
  28. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> So why don't we field the first question?
  29. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Anything on your mind Glenn or Deeanne?
  30. <DEEANNE> What is the best way to organize an attention-getting resume?
  31. <JOHN.MAIHOS> A nice clean resume means a lot to me.
  32. <JOHN.MAIHOS> White space...neat...easy to read typeface.
  33. <DEEANNE> what do you mean?...should they be on a single sheet of paper?
  34. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I assume you have great things to say about yourself of course.
  35. <DEEANNE> Certainly!
  36. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I like single sheet resumes in most cases.
  37. <JOHN.MAIHOS> They are easy for me to scan.
  38. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I don't have all day to search for your qualifications.
  39. <DEEANNE> Okay...I'm a teacher with 19 years experience teaching
  40. journalism...I've had a couple of years experience in public relations before
  41. this...I want to get back into PR....what do I emphasize?
  42. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Well...
  43. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I guess you have to try to relate your current experience to your
  44. desire to get back into PR.
  45. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I'd want to know why you want to make the switch.
  46. <JOHN.MAIHOS> (in your cover letter of course.)
  47. <DEEANNE> Would that go on a resume or a cover letter/
  48. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Is it for more money?
  49. <DEEANNE> ah..slow response...I see.
  50. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Is it kid burn-out?
  51. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Is it a desire to get back to the workforce instead of education?
  52. <DEEANNE> More money? I don't know...more creativity, more chance to develop
  53. and show off =my= skills :)
  54. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If you can illustrate this, I would read your resume.
  55. <DEEANNE> A desire to communicate with adults ;)
  56. <JOHN.MAIHOS> You've got a track record in education.
  57. <DEEANNE> So...in the cover letter I should make a point to explain =why= I'm
  58. seeking a change...not just tell my qualifications.
  59. <JOHN.MAIHOS> You can probably utilize this in the PR firm.
  60. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I would want to see a positive explanation on your part.
  61. <JOHN.MAIHOS> PR is the NEXT step or something.
  62. <DEEANNE> That's interesting...I had been trying to sell myself skill-wise, but
  63. hadn't been explaining that point.
  64. <JOHN.MAIHOS> What will you bring to my firm?
  65. <JOHN.MAIHOS> How does the teaching exp. make you a better candidate.
  66. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Give it a shot.
  67. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Any other comments mike?
  68. <DEEANNE> Do employers see that classroom experience can translate into
  69. business experience?
  70. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Also what creative writing have you done? and why would
  71. the employer need you.
  72. <DEEANNE> Or am I fighting an uphill battle to start?
  73. <JOHN.MAIHOS> To me, it depends on your development skills.  (curriculum, etc.)
  74. <DEEANNE> Shoot! I've =written= the journalism curriculum for three different
  75. school districts!
  76. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I hope we've given you some new approaches!
  77. <JOHN.MAIHOS> YES, that's important.
  78. <DEEANNE> You certainly have! Thanks a lot!
  79. <JOHN.MAIHOS> You might also look into the NIE department in a newspaper
  80. company.  :)
  81. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Any other questions Deeanne?
  82. <DEEANNE> That's a good idea...I've been involved in the NIE projects of the
  83. Houston papers.
  84. <DEEANNE> No...I'll just listen for a while.

  94. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> I'm just getting on my feet in this room . . . a
  95. number of the questions were answered by the previous person (Deeanne)
  96. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> Sean, there are jobs, if you look hard, but pay down
  97. here, generally is low.
  98. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Welcome Sean!
  99. <JOHN.MAIHOS> O.K. Richard.  You can learn a lot by just listening (or
  100. watching).
  101. <[Sean] S.CARY> I have noticed that!  I am Leaving the USMC soon and moving to
  102. the West Palm area.
  103. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Glenn go ahead with your questions.
  104. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> First, How do you deal in your resume and or cover
  105. letter with a period of unemployment (needless to say, I'm not looking
  106. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> any typing jobs
  107. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Right!
  108. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Me neither!
  109. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Janet handles the typing classes!<G>
  110. <JOHN.MAIHOS> The best way is to explain the period not employed.
  111. <JOHN.MAIHOS> What did you do?
  112. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Were you job hunting?
  113. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Tell the prospective employer.
  114. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> No, I had to take time off to care for my parents who
  115. spent a few years going into and out of hospitals
  116. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Short periods of unemployment are very common these days.
  117. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> hospitals
  118. <JOHN.MAIHOS> That's a very valid reason.
  119. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Personally, I would explain it that way.
  120. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> Super, Thanks!
  121. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Others may tell you to mention it only if asked.
  122. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> I agree with you John.
  123. <JOHN.MAIHOS> To me, it's better to offer the answer out front.
  124. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Second question?
  125. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> Well, Do I include a job in the resume, if I was fired?
  126. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It depends.
  127. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It depends on...
  128. <JOHN.MAIHOS> how long you were employed there.
  129. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> 10 months
  130. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Was it a very short term job?
  131. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If it was any more than a month, I would explain it.
  132. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> Yes, it was temporary employment, not a career
  133. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If 10 months, that needs to be discussed.
  134. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> OK
  135. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> Question on a similar subject (to Glenn's)  While I'm
  136. looking for work in TV
  137. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I would tell the prospective employer...
  138. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> John Doesn't it depend also what the termination was for?
  139. <JOHN.MAIHOS> what you learned from that experience.
  140. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> Thanks, I'll keep listening

  142. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> production, I'm a temp . . . going to a bunch of
  143. different sites.  How do I
  144. <JOHN.MAIHOS> And like Mike said...
  145. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> (briefly) describe the experience I've gained at these
  146. places?
  147. <JOHN.MAIHOS> the background is important.
  148. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Ok Richard...
  149. <JOHN.MAIHOS> first...
  150. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Mike, we might want to address Glenn's situation further in a
  151. minute or so...
  152. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I think you are on the right track, Richard.
  153. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> You are right John.
  154. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Give maybe one or two things that you picked up at each temp site.
  155. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Also, what you accomplished.
  156. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It will be good if you had the opportunity to see something to
  157. completion
  158. <JOHN.MAIHOS> at one of the temp jobs.
  159. <JOHN.MAIHOS> ok?
  160. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> Thanx
  161. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Anything to add, Mike?
  162. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Richard...
  163. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> You also want to tailor your past experiences in the
  164. temp....
  165. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> field to suit the perspective employer....
  166. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> If you were applying for a computer job.....
  167. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Having experience in the medical field as an orderly may
  168. not apply....
  169. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> It could still be mentioned but should be relegated to a
  170. less important aspect.
  171. <JOHN.MAIHOS> (Weren't the temp jobs in TV production?)
  172. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> As John ....
  173. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> said earlier...DON'T clutter up your resume with too much
  174. information...
  175. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> that the reader looses sight of who you are.
  176. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> No, John.  The temp work has been in everything but;
  177. I'm trying to get into TV,
  178. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> John?
  179. <JOHN.MAIHOS> So true!
  180. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> but I'm job hunting for ANYTHING right now . . . to pay
  181. the rent, the GEnie
  182. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If the temp jobs weren't in TV production....
  183. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> bills, etc.  Concerning stuffing a resume, how do I
  184. keep a simple, clean resume,
  185. <JOHN.MAIHOS> the I'd concentrate on ANY experience I have in the field or
  186. education-wise.
  187. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> but still be competitive when my only experience has
  188. been in classwork + freebie
  189. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> video productions?
  190. <JOHN.MAIHOS> By freebie, do you mean intern program?
  191. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> Intern, class project, public access video, independent
  192. training tape made
  193. <JOHN.MAIHOS> That's great.
  194. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> FOR some university program . . .
  195. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Use it.
  196. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Do another one if possible.
  197. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It's called buying experience.
  198. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Richard  You may want to look at some of the resumes that
  199. have been uploaded. Janet what page is that on?

  201. <JOHN.MAIHOS> O.K. Richard?
  202. <[Janet] J.ATTARD> type DIRECTORY if you forget the page number
  203. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> Got it.
  204. <DEEANNE> Hmmm...would volunteer experience in your field be worth stating on a
  205. resume...if you have 20+ years experience already?
  206. <JOHN.MAIHOS> In my opinion, yes.
  207. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It shows that you are willing to "give" your time too.
  208. <JOHN.MAIHOS> That's a community service.
  209. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It still means something to our company.
  210. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> time
  211. <DEEANNE> So all these newsletters I've been "volunteered" for count??? Yaaaay!
  212. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> sorry about that...
  213. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I thought you were the referee for a minute!
  214. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> What kind of resumes would you consider as "Counting?"
  215. <JOHN.MAIHOS> What do you mean?
  216. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> Scuse me . . . I meant NEWSLETTERS!!
  217. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Oh
  218. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> I've got resume-editing on my brain . . . job fair
  219. coming up this weekend . . .
  220. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Well, if it was some radical publication, I'd probably not
  221. mention it.  :)
  222. <DEEANNE> In my case...I've done newsletters for my professional organization,
  223. church, vegetarian society.
  224. <[Richard] R.BURKHART3> Radical crazy . . . meaning a Star Trek Fan Club? (big
  225. G)
  226. <JOHN.MAIHOS> No.  Star Trek's o.k. in my book.
  227. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I might say "variety of newsletters"
  228. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> KKK would not make it!!!!!
  229. <JOHN.MAIHOS> right.
  230. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Unless the job was with them.
  231. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Than you can't be a member of the NAACP!
  232. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Somehow I feel funny about mentioning the church newsletter and
  233. the vegetarian newsletter.
  234. <DEEANNE> Okay...should I include the fact I'm a GEnie RT assistant? Is that
  235. worth anything? <GGG>
  236. <JOHN.MAIHOS> There are some strange ideas out there.
  237. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Someone might equate these things with the wrong things.
  238. <DEEANNE> Hmmm...so you think vegetarian church-goers are weird, huh?
  239. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Not me.
  240. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I just think some people on the hiring side have weird ideas.
  241. <JOHN.MAIHOS> (I hate to say it, but it's true.)
  242. <DEEANNE> Okay...I'll cool it on those things, then. :)
  243. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I have no trouble mentioning if brought up though.
  244. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> You are right on that one JOhn.
  245. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Get the job first.

  258. with my employer's sales policy essentially, rip-off the customer.

  261. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> I definitely don't plan on mentioning it, and if asked
  262. at an interview, will be as tactful about as possible
  263. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Yes.  But obviously don't lie about it.

  266. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> yes
  267. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> You may be faced with the employer doing a reference
  268. check...
  269. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> so not mentioning it leaves it in the hands of your former
  270. employer...
  271. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> if the separation was less than amicable...
  272. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> I hadn't thought about that...
  273. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> there could be a major problem...
  274. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> I was very much less
  275. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> I meant it was
  276. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> No employer perspective or otherwise likes a surprise when
  277. following up on an application ...
  278. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> or reference checks of perspective employees.
  279. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> John.
  280. <JOHN.MAIHOS> You said it Mike.
  281. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I would definitely mention it..
  282. <JOHN.MAIHOS> and work with the answer.
  283. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If you were selling cars...
  284. <JOHN.MAIHOS> it's easy to tell someone you disagreed with the sales tactics.
  285. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Many people feel car salespeople are slightly manipulative anyway.
  286. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Hopefully the prospective employer...
  287. <JOHN.MAIHOS> doesn't have the same sales tactics as the older one.
  288. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> Actually selling was a minor part of the job (I was a
  289. portrait photographer for a store chain, selling accessories was part of it.
  290. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I see..the add-on sale.
  291. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> precisely
  292. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> You may find out in the interview...
  293. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> that the new employer has the same tactics and you
  294. wouldn't want to work for them!
  295. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> I figure to avoid any jobs [if possible] which involve
  296. sales in the future
  297. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Try to learn ahead of time what their sales practices are.
  298. <JOHN.MAIHOS> o.k.
  299. <[Glenn] G.WEINSTEIN1> These jobs are just temporary, until I can get
  300. recertified to flight instruct
  301. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Anything else quick?
  302. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It's nearing 11
